The human body is considered to be one of the most beautiful forms of art around. Though bodies are weird and confusing, they are gorgeous and should always be seen as such.

An epidemic has swept the internet and it destroys the most important thing a person can have: confidence. Slut shaming, in the simplest way put, is someone attacking another person for their body and/or exposure of it. Simple things such as a little skin in a selfie can send ravenous hate towards a young person. With hateful comments being shoved down the throats of those who are proud and happy in their skin, slut shaming can really affect people.

Being happy in your own skin seems to not only be rare these days, but also wrong. The common misconception placed upon our society is that showing off your body makes you less than those who don’t. Society has plastered the idea into the blind followers that it is not okay to flaunt your self-confidence. The only type of self-confidence women are allowed to have, so it seems, is behind closed doors; it is not for anyone to see. Women are automatically deemed sluts and whores purely due to the fact that their natural body is not hidden behind the clothes that are forced on them. Even though many young men and even some women will call others terrible names for posting nude/semi-nude pictures on the internet, said people will still ask for nudes in private messages. It seems to go back to the public idea – that if it is not public it is okay. Otherwise, girls are nothing more than a slut. The most hypocritical thing boys do is ask for nudes and call girls awful, demeaning names for sending them. When names are being called, self-esteem and happiness die down immensely. Those who hate on others seem to either be unaware or simply do not care that they are damaging people. The hate can be so bad, it can make someone never see themselves as anything worthwhile. Being happy in your own skin is not an easy thing; it takes a lot of courage to post pictures online. It is extremely detrimental to be told not to show off how happy you are with yourself; it makes it seem as if people should hide themselves. During the stages of development for young girls, to be hated on and called the worst names imaginable really impedes happiness and true growth as a person and a woman.

Girls and boys and women and men should always be able to post freely. Whether it be pictures of themselves, or stories of things that occurred to them, people should not have to worry about the hate they could receive. The human body is a beautiful oddity and should be embraced, not hated. We as people should empower one another to flaunt our beauty. We are human beings with unique and wonderful bodies that do miraculous things. Hating something so natural and graceful is a waste of time when it could be spent embracing and loving. The generation we are in now has some of the hateful remnants from the previous generations, where women were nothing more than house cleaners and baby makers. Women are the most amazing and complex creatures and have so much beauty within them that it can be a little too much to handle. Hating on beauty is destructive and wrong.

Dear people, do not slut shame. Embrace each other, love each other, and love yourself. We are all beautiful and amazing people who deserve to feel like such. Support one another, build each other up and do not hate. Hate does nothing but creates resentment and pain. Love is what we need to strive as people and as a generation. Let’s be the generation to end the unjust and unfair societal norms placed upon women. Let’s be the change we need.
